Is it getting a little bit harder to hear over time? Many simple hearing exercises that can help to improve your hearing by practicing them regularly. Here are three simple exercises that we share with our patients to help improve their hearing.
Filter Out Noise at Home
Filtering is used to refer the practice of blocking out the excess noise to focus on a single sound or thing. By practicing filtering, you will have better hearing in public and in private. Start this exercise by playing music from a few different devices all at the same time. If you have a television, laptop, and boombox, those are all great tools to start with; alternatively, have a conversation with someone else in your household while one, two, and three of those devices are all playing at the same time. Practice using the same level of noise when you speak and work your way up to refine the skill. Filtering helps you to hear more effectively in loud public places.
Find Sounds
Noticing and locating sounds are important hearing skills that many people lose as they age. Place yourself in an environment where multiple different sounds and tones occur at the same time, like a shopping mall. Carefully close your eyes and try to focus on a single sound at a time. You can start by honing in on the sound of the drink machine at the food court restaurant next to where you are seated. Next, try to listen for the sound of footsteps walking by. As you get the hang of it, practice noticing sounds and then identifying what they are. This hearing exercise is invaluable for spending time in noisy places.
Try Brain Games
Brain games are a popular new way to boost your hearing. There are many different games on brain training platforms aimed at improving hearing and focus. Work with your doctor at Clarity Audiology to identify a few different specific games that can help to improve your hearing.
