Five Tips for Wearing Your Hearing Aid at Work

Hearing Aid At Work

Here are some valuable tips for wearing a hearing aid at work.

We’re fortunate to live in a time where physical disabilities are not as stigmatized as they once were. However, there are still some stigmas that exist that may make it difficult for those with hearing impairments to advocate for themselves. With that in mind, we’ve compiled five tips to help navigate the workplace while using a hearing aid or assistive listening devices.

Get Written Notes When Possible

One of the best ways to give yourself a leg up is to work with as much written or documented material as possible. Having someone take minutes during meetings and conference calls is a great way to help more than just those who are hearing impaired. Likewise, having written materials in the forms of email or group chats over spoken conversations can be optimal for everyone.

Use Round Tables

When group meetings and settings are needed, suggest that the team meet in smaller groups at a round table. This can help ensure that everyone is visible which can help you make use of lip reading and gestures. Additionally, smaller groups mean there is less talking over each other leading to clearer, more manageable conversations that are more productive.

Make Everyone Aware

While it may seem obvious to you that you are using a hearing device, others may not find it as clear. It’s always best to be upfront about your equipment and needs so that they can ensure that they know. Not only does this prevent them from mistakenly believing you are not paying attention, but it also helps keep them aware of how to help.

Try Captioned Telephones

Today’s technology allows for all kinds of useful advances for those who are hearing impaired. Captioned telephones, in particular, offer an excellent way for those with hearing difficulties in making and receiving calls and participating in conferences without getting lost.

Try Bluetooth Technology

One of the many problems with hearing aids is that they often interfere with phones and create difficulties and discomfort. With a simple switch flip on your hearing aid, you’ll be able to use the phone with no trouble at all.
