Four Occupations That May Need Ear Protection

Some jobs are louder than others…

Hearing is one of our most precious commodities, which makes ear protection all the more important. While there are ways to keep our hearing at its sharpest in our daily lives, some occupations require more care for hearing than others. Below are four occupations that may need ear protection. Some may surprise you!

1. Working In a Workshop

The first occupation you might think of as needing extra hearing protection is construction, and you’d be right. However, people with jobs in carpentry and metalworking are also at risk of hearing loss. When there’s a job requiring heavy machinery to be a part of the daily routine, the noise level is high and the chance for hearing loss is just as high.

2. Working In Transport

People who work closely with airplanes, buses, subways, and other transportation vehicles require greater ear protection as well. The loud and constant whirr of powerful engines have their effect, even if it is minor. One can wear ear protection devices when driving, whether working in the industry or simply traveling, but needs to remember to be aware of their surroundings.

3. Working with Noisy Children

Believe it or not, but occupations in which one works with children can induce hearing loss. The volleying cries of happily (or not so happily) playing children, while welcome, can still harm the ears of those working at a school, nursery, or daycare. The ears of stay-at-home mothers may be included. To ensure good ear protection practices, wearing earplugs or headphones when needed, such as during group projects, can help.

4. Working in Motorsports

The field of motorsports comes not only with deafening applause, but with deafening engines too. Like the loud noises from large transportation vehicles, reverberations from motorsports vehicles can have the power to do some mighty damages. Thankfully, motorsports athletes use helmets with ear protection built in. The takeaway is still clear: environments involving a more or less constant stream of great noises can take their toll on people’s ears, with some occupations ranking in this category.
