If you suffer from hearing loss at any stage, whether mild or severe, holidays and other social gatherings can present a challenge. It can become frustrating to miss a word or two at the dinner table or barbeque, and asking people to raise their voices isn’t always the best solution. Don’t be shy to try these ways of handling hearing loss on Labor Day weekend.
Communicate
First, communicate early to your family and friends who you will meet with that you have mild hearing loss. You could let them know ahead of time or at the gathering, whenever appropriate. Perhaps you could plan ahead of time for allowance at a strategic spot at the dinner table or restaurant, and use a setting that limits its overall noise levels.
Strategize
When situated in a social gathering, it is best to sit at the middle of the table where it will be easiest to see everyone’s faces. This will make it easier to use visual cues to see who is talking, reacting, and so on. You can also sit against a wall to reduce background noise.
Don’t Be Shy
If you are speaking with someone, don’t be shy to ask to move to a less crowded area. Feel free to ask if you can move to a sparser area with less noise or go for an after-party walk to catch up with a friend. Avoid the kitchen and other hot spot areas where noise is at its peak. In an indoor house setting, the couch is better for acoustics.
Use Technology
If you have hearing aids or other assistive listening devices, use them! There is no better way to function than with hearing that is as accurate as possible. Consistent use of these devices is also key to helping your brain adjust to the corrected hearing. If they are very new and too bothersome, practice in quieter settings.
