Hearing loss is likely more common in the United States among a broad span of ages than many might imagine. Indeed, we tend to be much more aware of vision issues across the generations and somewhat blind to hearing loss among any other age group than the elderly. Hearing loss in adolescents is an issue that one can do one’s best to prevent today.
Is Teenage Hearing Loss on the Rise?
A prominent study by the Journal of the American Medical Association concluded that there was an alarming rise in hearing loss cases in adolescents between 1994 and 2006. However, future studies were to show mixed results, and in the end, one cannot say for certain that teenage hearing loss is increasing. This is good news; even so, the results do show that teenage and young adult hearing loss continues to be an issue today.
How to Prevent Hearing Loss in Adolescents
Common causes of hearing loss in adolescents include listening to music through headphones and earbuds, attending music concerts, and sudden incidents of loud noise exposure. Hearing loss can also occur due to a traumatic head injury, although this is rare. Teenagers and young adults know that exposure to these noises poses a threat to their hearing but typically do not take precautions and participate anyway.
Prevention starts with raising awareness of the dangers of loud noise exposure and the cost of hearing loss. At any age, hearing loss can cause frustration, social isolation, depression, and balance issues. It is worth it to protect one’s hearing!
If an adult or peer notices that another adolescent could be hurting their hearing, it doesn’t hurt to mention the concern. Looking out for each other is another way to prevent hearing loss in adolescents.
