Travel can be stressful, especially during the holidays when airports are full and people are stressed. Luckily, a little forethought and planning can ease the stress of almost any travel situation. It is especially true if you wear hearing aids. Traveling with hearing aids does not have to be extra stressful, especially if you follow these tips.
Pack, Prep, And Plan
When you are planning your trip, there are a few important things to keep in mind. First, if you are traveling internationally, you will likely need to buy a converter so that you can still charge your hearing aid in other countries. You will also need to be able to plug in your dehumidifier. If your hearing aid takes batteries, make sure you buy and pack plenty of spares, and do not forget to pack your cleaning supplies. It is essential to care for the investment you’ve made in your hearing aid during your travels. Finally, when booking your flight, make sure that you do not reserve an exit row seat. It is against safety regulations for anyone with any disability, including hearing loss, to sit in the exit row.
Plan For The Airport
Traveling is hard, but it is even harder when you cannot hear. Make sure that you have your hearing aids with you and that they are fully charged. If yours uses batteries, make sure you have extras in your carry-on, so you have them during layovers or if something happens to your checked baggage. Finally, when you are heading through security, turn down the volume on your hearing aid before heading through the metal detector. You should also make a point to tell the security officers that you are hard of hearing so they can help you through the checkpoint.
Communicate About Your Hearing Loss
In addition to telling security about your hearing issues, make sure that someone on the plane knows as well. It could be your flight attendant or the other passengers in your row. Your best bet is to communicate your issue to both so they can help you in an emergency.
