Tinnitus — the ringing, hissing, or buzzing sounds that some people experience in their ears, can be difficult to live with. There are a few things that can be done to relieve this problem from home, but remember that any approach should be used along with any treatment or hearing aids prescribed by your doctor.
Study the Problem
Certain foods, drinks, or drugs can make tinnitus symptoms worse. Every individual is different, so it’s important to learn which triggers apply to you specifically. Keep a written log and try to isolate each problem. Some possible triggers include caffeine (colas, coffee, tea, energy drinks), alcohol, aspirin, and salt.
Avoid Bad Habits
Bad habits like smoking can make tinnitus symptoms worse. Smoking harms blood flow to the sensitive nerve cells that control your hearing. Smoking also stimulates your body which make the ringing in your ears appear louder.
Fight Sound with Sound
When it’s quiet the ringing sensation caused by tinnitus is even more noticeable. Playing soft music in the background, listening to the radio, or even just turning on a fan can help distract you and override the ringing sounds. White-noise applications that generate the sounds of ocean waves, rainfall, running streams, city life, or airplane cabins can also prove useful in the fight against tinnitus.
Relax
Tinnitus can cause stress and anxiety, which will only make symptoms worse. Try to find ways to relax and ease your mood. Yoga, tai-chi, meditation, or progressive muscle relaxation techniques are great methods for masking tinnitus symptoms and improving your concentration. Also make sure that you are getting enough sleep and avoiding fatigue. For some people, the only solution to tinnitus is ignoring it. Keeping your mind occupied is the first step toward coping.
