More Things That Worsen Tinnitus

Did you know these things could affect your tinnitus? Here’s what to know.

Tinnitus is no joking business; millions of Americans suffer from that “ringing in the ears” intermittently or chronically. Tinnitus can naturally cause distress and annoyance, and, in severe cases, it can cause depression and insomnia. Tinnitus can cause health problems, but health problems can also cause tinnitus. In a previous blog post, we discussed how loud noises, medication, high blood pressure, and earwax can cause it. Today, we’ll be discussing five more things that worsen tinnitus.

Stress

Tinnitus can cause stress, but stress can worsen tinnitus, too. In this day and age, it is more important than ever to relax and be at peace. Even during a hectic workday, it is good to be intentional about keeping relaxed despite the hustle. Give yourself time to be alone and rest at least once a week.

Sleep Deprivation

Sleep deprivation can also worsen tinnitus due to the many problems that go with it. Without a proper night’s rest, one is far more likely to become anxious, depressed, and strained. These poor moods affect one’s physical health and one’s choices. For example, one’s heart rate can increase, and caffeine can sometimes aggravate rather than help. Making a habit of getting at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night is best.

Diet

Did you know that diet can also affect one’s hearing health? Some things, like artificial sweeteners and caffeine, can trigger tinnitus. Deficiencies in certain minerals and vitamins can also affect hearing health, such as iron. One way to determine what could be problematic in your diet is to keep a journal and note what you ate and when your tinnitus got worse.

Air Pressure

If your tinnitus seems to get worse right before a storm or as the weather warms up, it’s not your imagination! Changes in air pressure can affect your tinnitus. The inner ear contains an organ that helps balance the entire body. In times when air pressure changes or when flying in an airplane, be mindful to practice self-care.

Infections

An ear infection or a sickness can also cause or worsen tinnitus. An ear infection inflames the inner ear and can cause hearing to become distorted. Likewise, an illness can also affect the ears and aggravate tinnitus. If you need help with tinnitus relief in the Baltimore area, contact Clarity Audiology!
