It’s not too late to participate in National Protect Your Hearing Month! October is the time to remember the importance of hearing health for all ages and to check with your audiologist how your hearing is doing. Noise-induced hearing loss is a significant issue among teens and adults across the United States. Read on to learn more about National Protect Your Hearing Month and how you can benefit.
National Protect Your Hearing Month
The National Institute of Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) started a hearing awareness campaign called It’s a Noisy Planet, Protect Your Hearing in 2008, and has since reached around six million people with its message. In 2017, NIDCD and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found in their research that about 24% of adults from 20 to 69 years old have at least signs of noise-induced hearing loss in one or both ears. Through National Protect Your Hearing Month, audiologists across the country are raising awareness and helping people protect and manage their hearing health.
About NIHL
Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is one of the most common types of hearing loss. It happens when the hairs of the cochlea, an organ in the inner ear shaped like a snail shell, are damaged. Exposure to loud noise or loud noise on a routine basis usually causes NIHL. If a teen constantly listens to music through earbuds, a musician plays in an orchestra, or someone goes to a concert, that person could experience noise-induced hearing loss over time. Because it happens gradually, NIHL generally doesn’t become noticeable until significant damage has occurred; even so, NIHL is a highly preventable condition.
Ways to Protect Your Hearing
There are three ways to protect your hearing:
- Turn down the noise: Keep noise levels at a safe level.
- Move away from the noise, if possible.
- Wear hearing protection like earplugs and earmuffs when needed.
