Reasons to See an Audiologist

Audiologist

If you feel like your hearing is deteriorating go see an audiologist.

Unbeknownst to most people hearing is one of the leading birth defects in the U.S and is also one of the most reported job injuries as well. So to you it may not be the biggest concern or you may not know when to visit an audiologist but it’s in your best interest to visit as soon as possible. Seeing an audiologist is the same if not more important than visiting your physician for your yearly checkup. Even though physicians do look at your ears, audiologists go into more detail on the state of your ears rather than just telling you that you have a build up of ear wax in the ear. It is recommended that if your physician does find a build-up of earwax, you should schedule an appointment with your audiologist.

Hearing Loss and Tinnitus

One of the most known ailments that affect the ears is tinnitus, which is a constant ringing in the ear which can be temporary or permanent. People who are known to get this disease are people who worked in noisy job environments like people who work in factories, airplane hangers, concert venues, and construction jobs. Most people have felt the effects of tinnitus when going to a concert or maybe a NASCAR race, usually the ringing sound you hear goes away within a few hours of the event or the next day. If you still hear that ringing noise after more than 24 hours, it’s in your best interest to visit an audiologist. Although this is the most known way in which people get tinnitus, it can also be a side effect of aging or caused by an infection or disease.

Hearing Aids for Tinnitus and Driving

Not every case of tinnitus needs a hearing aid to help with the effects but if your hearing has been declining then Tinnitus hits you, it may be time for you to get a hearing aid. Hearing aids help people affected with Tinnitus and other hearing conditions to focus in on sounds they want to hear and drown out the ringing sound from Tinnitus. Another good thing for those who have a hearing aid with Tinnitus, your hearing aid can be programmed to help alleviate the ringing of Tinnitus. Even if you have a hearing aid and are suffering from Tinnitus you can still have some sense of independence by still being able to drive. Make sure to wear your aid while driving a car and always make sure to go to hearing aid checkups so you won’t have to worry about it dying while you’re driving. One of the biggest tips to drive while wearing your aid is to limit the number of distractions while driving such as texting, talking on the phone and limiting the volume of the music being played in your car. Another tip is to be more focused on the visual cues while driving, making sure you’re going the correct speed if there are any crossing or stops signs.
