Selecting a Hearing Aid: Key Questions

Selecting a Hearing Aid: Key Questions

There are many hearing aid styles, but these questions can help you choose the one for you.

Selecting a hearing aid is a delicate process; it involves choosing between many styles based on many factors of your hearing loss. Thankfully, there are several key questions you can ask to make the process quite simple. While there might be many styles from which to choose, you can make a choice simple by answering these simple questions.

If You Have Hearing Aids:

Do You Like Your Current Style?

There are different questions to ask depending on whether you have hearing aids or not already. If you do, then ask yourself honestly if you like your current hearing aid style. If you have any concerns about your ability to handle the aids, its look, or its features, you can always talk with your audiologist to find a better solution.

Has Your Hearing Altered?

Some hearing aid styles are more suitable for profound hearing loss vs. mild hearing loss, although In-The-Canal hearing aids work for all types of hearing loss conditions. However, if your hearing loss has improved or worsened, you will want to get a hearing aid that can accurately translate sound so you stay in optimum health. If you like your current hearing aid style, you can check out a different version in the same style.

If You Don’t Have Hearing Aids:

Do You Have Dexterity Issues?

If you don’t have a hearing aid yet, there are several questions to answer first. First, do you have dexterity issues? Taking your hearing aid in and out every day should be easy, without the danger of continually missing or dropping your device on the floor.

Are You Homebound?

Another question to ask is what your travel habits are like. Do you typically stay in one place, or do you go to varied settings such as crowded rooms or lecture halls? Along with this topic, are your movements restricted in any way? If yes to either of these questions, a Behind-the-Ear model could be the best type for you.

What’s Your Hearing Level?

Lastly, what is your hearing loss condition? Your hearing loss could fall into any of these categories: mild, moderate, severe, or profound. Ultimately, your audiologist will help in selecting a hearing aid that suits your hearing needs.
