These Summer Things Could Affect Your Ears

Hear clear this summer and watch out for these risks to hearing health!

Summer is on a roll! With summer comes more activities, adventures, and memories. What will you be doing this summer? Whether you’re going out and exploring or staying at home, it’s important to care for your health, including your hearing health. Watch out for these summer things that could affect your ears!

Concerts and Parties

Concerts, parties, karaoke, you name it–any event with loud music is going to threaten your hearing health. It isn’t uncommon for loudspeakers to be way louder than is safe for your hearing. Hearing loss from noise exposure can be temporary, but repeated exposure can cause permanent damage. Don’t be self-conscious about wearing hearing protection when you need it.

Swimming

Swimming is great fun, but there is a tiny chance for viruses and bacteria to be present, especially if you are swimming off the Maryland coast in a river or the Bay. If you catch any form of respiratory illness, there is a risk of developing an ear infection as well. All you need to do is to care for your overall health, address respiratory illnesses, and avoid contaminated waters.

Airplanes

Airplane ear is a feeling of discomfort and fullness in the ear after taking off or landing in a plane that lasts for several hours. It is more common with young children, but it could happen to anyone. You can easily avoid it by swallowing as the air pressure changes so the air pressure in your ears can adjust.

Blenders

Summer is the best time to drink smoothies and milkshakes, or protein shakes if you work out. Blenders and other household items, like hair dryers and lawnmowers, can be so loud that they could threaten your hearing. If you aren’t sure that your ears can handle it, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Other Loud Noises

Constant moderate noises can cause as much hearing damage as sudden loud noises. Listening to music with earbuds at a moderate level for several hours could be just as damaging as hearing a gunshot up close with no hearing protection.

Wet Hearing Aids

Do you have hearing aids? Don’t let the summer heat or summer water activities make them wet! Keep them dry and store them in an airy, cool place at night.
