Our ability to hear is a complex and amazing aspect of our physical make-up. It is well worth protecting and taking care of our ears. Over time, or due to different reasons, we may lose some of our hearing over time. It is important to address hearing loss of any kind, as hearing is one of the main ways we experience and interact with the world. Below are the ways to both protect, improve, and care for your hearing.
Avoid Loud Noises
Perhaps the most fundamental way to care for one’s ears is to protect them from any noises that can cause damage. Very loud noises for a sustained period of time can cause temporary or permanent hearing loss. Wear headphones or earplugs if you know you will be in particularly loud situations like using a lawnmower or enjoying an outdoor concert.
Give Your Ears a Rest
Sometimes your ears might just need a rest from enduring a loud environment for a while. You may just need to keep in a quiet space and let your ears heal. Do not use earbuds or headphones to listen to music. If you do, keep the volume low by making sure the music cannot be too easily heard by an outsider.
Keep Them Clean
Keeping your ears clean is another way to keep your hearing clear. A build-up of wax in narrow ear canals need more frequent cleaning. More common in children, objects stuck in the ear need prompt removal as well.
Practice Active Listening
While the previous tips covered how to maintain clear hearing, the next few tips are ways that you can improve hearing. Practice honing in on specific sounds to sharpen your hearing. For example, you could target specific background noises among other ones, or have someone read a book in a noisy room and pinpoint what and where they are reading.
Exercise Regularly
General exercising can also help. Increasing blood circulation will boost the function of the ears and the brain and so promote healthy hearing. Taking a walk or jog, riding a bike, or doing housework can help. Yoga and meditation are also known ways of increasing blood circulation, as well as doing puzzles to exercise the brain itself.
Get a Hearing Test
Lastly, it is important to evaluate the real state of your hearing. An audiologist can tell you the best course of action for your ears and reconnect you with your community and the world around you.
