If your child is struggling with signs of early hearing loss, getting a hearing aid can be incredibly beneficial to their long term treatment and success in school. Many types of treatment are used for hearing loss in children including speech and language therapy and auditory habilitation – and both procedures are made easier if hearing aids are used earlier. If you suspect that your child might suffer from hearing loss, there are several signs you will want to look out for, but make sure you take your child to a specialist to be sure and to start the process of finding and fitting a hearing aid. For young children, in particular, continuous use of a hearing aid is critical for a variety of reasons, today we’ll be going over three of those.
Brain Development
As your child grows, the brain does too – from birth to the age of three this growth is incredibly rapid and influenced by a variety of outside factors including sound. If your child has a hearing issue and it is not addressed, it can result in the slowing of critical brain development responsible for language, speech, and hearing.
Language Development
As children grow one of the first things they work on is the development of language skills. When the hearing is impaired, this gives them a significant disadvantage, as early language skills are not taught as much they are “caught.” Structure, syntax and early vocabulary almost always come from merely picking up on how those around them converse. If your child has trouble hearing, they may not be able to pick up on these critical tools as easily.
Bonding
There are many ways that children bond with their parents and sound can be one of them. While it is by no means the only way, the use of comforting and consistent sounds can help build feelings of trust, confidence, and security.
